Draft Surveys

Precise draft-based cargo weight determination in accordance with international guidelines.

Overview

Comprehensive Draft Surveys You Can Trust

Draft surveys remain the industry-standard method for determining bulk cargo weight loaded or discharged, particularly where shore-based weighing is unavailable or contested. SIMS surveyors carry out precise draft readings at the six standard reading points, combined with density, deadweight, and constant determinations, to calculate cargo weight with a high degree of accuracy.

We follow internationally recognized draft survey procedures (in line with ISO and P&I club guidance) and cross-check readings against the vessel's hydrostatic tables and stability data. Our reports are structured to support fast, transparent settlement between shippers, receivers, and carriers.

Draft Surveys

Service Benefits

  • Accurate bulk cargo weight determination without shore scales
  • Standardized six-point draft reading methodology
  • Cross-checked against hydrostatic tables and stability data
  • Reduces loading/discharge disputes between shipper and receiver
  • Fast turnaround to avoid vessel demurrage
  • Experienced in bulk grain, ore, coal, and fertilizer cargoes

Our Inspection Procedure

  1. 1

    Initial Draft Reading

Readings taken at forward, midship, and aft points on both port and starboard sides.

  2. 2

    Density Determination

Water density measured at the vessel's location to correct displacement calculations.

  3. 3

    Constant Verification

Vessel's light-ship constant reviewed and verified against recent survey history.

  4. 4

    Cargo Calculation

Displacement before and after loading/discharge compared to determine cargo weight.

  5. 5

    Report Issuance

Findings documented and issued promptly to support cargo settlement.
